Hypertable Distributed DataBase

Many data-driven businesses are currently limited by previous-generation server-centric DataBase platforms. Probably the first company that faced the problem of "web-scale" data-sets and, in a web-driven world, many other organizations start facing the challenge of managing petabyte-scale data-sets. Google developed the BigTable concept (presentation here), a proprietary, high-performance DataBase system built on top of the distributed Google File System (aka GFS).
Event search firm Zvents, with its open-source HyperTable project, takes this idea one step further and the Yahoo developers seem eager to jump in the bandwagon.
